This sounds like it would have worked, IF they hadn't announced it to the press. Now piraters/bootleggers no what to look for to crack it right out of the gate. Stupid move on their part.

It's probably a publicly traded company, if they don't announce results... their investors will abandon Either way, crackers are going to break it. What was it? an 18 year old that cracked the dvd encryption?

Do they really think this will stop pirating? If it can be created, it can be copied/cracked/broken. Its simple, stop raping the consumers with high-priced (quality or not) products, thats the answer. Even then it won't stop.

No offense, but I don't think that excuse flys in the DVD industry cover newbie. $18 CDs with 3 good tracks yes, but a $15 DVD with 15+ hours of entertainment with extras is a fair price.

The exception being HBO with their 10 hour sets for $80+ dollars.

No offense taken, I'm not justifying piracy, its just how I view whats going on.

New movies come out ALL the time and they expect everybody to go to the cinema for every one released & buy every edition of every dvd released that comes out, and when they don't get the sales they expect they blame pirating (whether its the cause or not) and the way they estimate losses can't be accurate.

I could be wrong but I think the industry will be dissapointed with the sale of HD dvds. People are only going to replace their collections so many times, which is why I'm holding out as much as possible for HDs.

Excellent point, and i think the entire industry expects too much from the consumer. the idea of dvd may infact have been planned obselence BUT it was sold to consumers as replace your degraded, damaged, fragile VHS tapes with DVDs that have hundred year shelf-life.

Now, how are they going to sell the consumer on HD-DVD knowing full well that John Q Public isn't going to replace their dvd players all at the same time. I think...or at least, hope, that HD-DVD does not replace the regular dvd as quickly as DVD did it to VHS/LD because it will set a pattern for the studios since they know they can fuck the consumer even more and more everyday that we will begin to see new revisions on DVD technologies more and more!!!!

Well they have alread tried "Rip-Guard" on Madagascar, which turned out to be a huge failure. Not only was there programs removing the protection within 36 hours of DVD release, but the movie would not even play on the DVD player at my parents house. Turns out the encryption can conflict with older model DVD players.

Now, as a consumer, it makes you scratch your head. You hear about the big companies losing millions of dollar due to piracy. Since they are loosing so much money the invested something like $300-400 thousand dollars in the development of this protection. Those factors in and of themselves will not ease pricings on their products. But the kicker is when the consumer, who companies should be pampering to, purchases their products and it does not even work.
