For me, it's a three-way tie bewteen BLACK HAWK DOWN, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and WE WERE SOLIDERS
APOCALYPSE NOW, PLATOON and LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA are all very respectable runner-ups.

saving private ryan, full metal jacket and we were soldiers are the best movies lately. I love the great escape, dirty dozen and patton are great older flicks. Braveheart and The Patriot rank up there too.
And I still cant believe that no one but me likes Red Dawn! Damn that's a great movie!

I'll cast a vote for "The Longest Day" - the story of the Normandy Invasions in WW2. Not just because it's an entertaining film (it is), but because it is based on facts that really happened, places that really exist, and characters who really did the things shown. That's the main difference between this film and something like "Saving Private Ryan" or "Apocalypse Now".
We visited Normandy last spring, and saw a number of the places referred to (and used) in the film. We took a "Battlebus" tour, and the guide made several references to The Longest Day and that "this was the place where that actually happened, just as they showed it in the film."

Schindlers List - if it counts as a war movie.
