Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN II
HALLOWEEN II (2009)
POSSIBLE SPOILERS
Got back from a matinee a little bit ago. This is a terrible movie. Pointless, ugly, completely lacking in style, and so obviously lackidasical and rushed in conception and execution that it has "contractual obligation" written all over it. It's borderline audience-contempt. Some may find value in the fact that it's one of those alienating sequels that seems intent on dividing the audience, but frankly, it's just a lazy, ill-advised endeavor. One pivotal plot element seems to exist only to provide more screen time for Sheri Moon Zombie, and that's getting old. I mean, even Ron Howard has left Clint Howard out of a couple movies. I'm convinced now more than ever that the brilliant THE DEVIL'S REJECTS was a complete fluke and that Zombie's another derivative hack. He said everything he had to say with that film, and now he's just ripping himself off. There's no scares and no suspense in HALLOWEEN II. It's not shocking. It's just ugly, brutal, and disgusting for its own sake (the 23rd knife plunge is no longer shocking, Rob).
Plus, it's sloppily-constructed, with dream scenes within dream scenes, and Malcolm McDowell seemingly in another, concurrently-playing film, and the cameos (Margot Kidder; Howard Hesseman, cast radically against type as an aging hippie; the inevitable Daniel Roebuck; and uh, Weird Al Yankovic? Seriously?) are just distracting, and only exist to provide Zombie's D-list supporting cast with something to pimp while charging fans $25 a pop for a photo or an autograph at the next horror con). The only positives in this thing are the performances of Brad Dourif and Danielle Harris. I would've much rather watched a HALLOWEEN sequel that focused on THEIR characters.
Forget it. It's worse than the one where Michael was revealed to be part of a Druid cult. Guaranteed to make my worst of 2009 list. Well, OK, it's better than CROWLEY. So it's got that going for it.
