In my opinion, the best horror franchise out there. 1-8 are the best. After Paramount sold the rights to New Line, things went down hill. My favorite sequel in the series is Part V: A New Beginning. But, I'm not going to ramble.

For me, FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VI: JASON LIVES was the highlight of the series, with a much needed dose of humor ("What were you going to be when you grew up?") and a new direction for the series (Jason is a zombie!). As far as the first film, it was primarily a dumbed-down distillation of the Italian giallo films with its killer p.o.v. camera shots and brutal murder set pieces. Tom Savini made a name for himself on this film and DAWN OF THE DEAD and introduced gut-wrenchingly realistic graphic violence to the genre. However, the film's direction is bland and derivative. Especially derivative is the "two people skewered at once" in FRIDAY THE 13TH PART II. It was lifted from Mario Bava's TWITCH OF THE DEATH NERVE. The series (as did THE PLANET OF THE APES) went on too long and suffered from a limited premise stretched too far. FREDDY VS. JASON was fun, though.
Fans of the series would do well to seek out the FRIDAY THE 13TH O.O.P. Japanese laser disc, which although time-compressed, contains the uncut (gorier) version of the first film. Especially during Kevin Bacon's death.
Paramount Home Video would do well to repay the films' fans by issuing a deluxe DVD box set of the unrated versions of the films.

Has anyone ever seen PART 3 in 3D, by the way? And if so, how was it?

I wrote a long post about a year ago, as a rep theater in toronto (which is actually closed now **RIP the Kingsway)

used to show it every hallowenn in 3-d (as one of the 3-d effects guys that worked on the film, actually lives in toronto, and has an actual print he lends to the theatre to use)

and he has an introduction to the film, and a Q&A after every show

I've seen it 3 times in 3-d since 1999

I'm a sucker for 3d (even crappy red/blue red/ green 3-d

i have seen tons of 3-d films in my life

the first i ever saw was house of wax (1953) in its re-release in 1983 then spacehunter the same year

and the best 3-d film i have ever seen was The polar express, as it had depth, and layers

and i wish they could figure out how to translater 3-d to the small screen, as Friday 3-d and even freddy's dead (the last 5 minutes) would be great to watch at home

I really like the 2nd one. The hockey mask visual is very scary, but after seeing it so much, and then seeing the sack mask with one eye hole was pretty weird. plus the ending was nice.
