I think people miss the point that it was an actual tape that was playing from start to finish and not actually a tape that intercuts into a movie of the events that weren't recorded on the tape. If you remember no one removed the original tape and they were messing with it during the party to show how the camera ended up in the hands of the person with the camera. We also learn why they have the camera and why it was important to record the party. This is an actual tape of what was filmed on the tape so there would be some stuff missing or other issues in the events of the night when turning on and off.

Since the goofball Hud didn't know how to use the camera he sometimes just didn't stop the tape and start it on a dime. I remember the days when people tried to tape shows over shows on old VHS tapes and you would get the old stuff you taped over in between becasue you didn't start in the same place you stopped. He did at certian points stop and relook at the tape in some cases so it is very reasonable to have those clips in it. This is very realistic and with all that is going on it is perfectly reasonable side effect from it.

The back story was important to the fact that why would he even go after the girl unless there was a reason. We find out all of that with the back story. From what I hear the back story will have a lot to do with the sequel if it gets off the ground.

I don't see all the holes nor see that they were just patting themselves on the back with their ingenuity. They made it as if it truly was a tape that was found by the US government that documents what they recorded throughout the night. We see only what they see. I think the taping over the the Coney Island day was a unique way to show prior events without ruining the continuity of the premise that it was a found tape.

Obviously I like the movie and everyone is entitle to their opinion so this is just my two sense worth and no disrespect is intended.

when you start/stop taping, you don't fast forward through that much footage.

next, the whole ending where you see the thing hit the water....you think that is not total cheeseball?

as for the back story...it is totally unimportant except that they wanted to try to tell some tiny story....it would have been better and more authentic if they didn't do that.

The thing that hits the water is a satellite they referenced at the beginning of the movie and not the monster. It is part of the huge viral campaign posted on the web that all interlocks all the companys in the movie, the back story, and the monster.

Who says it is not possible to fast forward that far? There are no laws of physics that say you can only go so far forward. I am sure he took the time while running down the road being chased by the monster, the parasites in the subway, and also the military his first priority was to take the time to make sure he started exactly where he left off.

This is a movie made for pure entertainment. People take it way too serious. It was made to sit and watch for fun and not for everyone to nitpick about the art of video taping while running down the street from a monster.

In case it happens to anyone else here are some tips for better video editing.

Rules for video taping while being chased by a monster

1. Make sure you have a clean fresh tape brand new out of the package. We don't want to tape over any uneeded footage incase someone finds this and plays it back. It would ruin the footage in case you can't follow rule #3.
2. Make sure you have a fully charged battery ready to go.
3. Practice starting, stopping, and reviewing footage while running to make sure you have seemless transition between recordings.
4. Even though your shooting video at a party don't start rolling until the Monster appears on cue that you don't know that is coming.
5. No romantic relationships on camera it ruins the choas and carnage. It is not important in the grand scheme of things if the footage is found in the unforseen case you are eaten. We don't care who you love we just love to see you get eaten and suffer.
6. Most importantly make sure you have taken a shower and worn clean clothes in case your eaten by the monster. We don't wan't him to eat a dirty human.

pot...kettle....anyone????

by the way...if you haven't figured out the link between the sat falling and the monster...then i can't help you on that.

the monster might as well have been george jetson in a pink bowtie and a mohawk haircut and it would have been just as menacing. the weak attempt to create a backstory was half-assed. the plot holes about NY and devices used to advance the plot in terms of setting, props etc are too much to overcome. so, I guess what you are misunderstanding from my posts is that the movie was completely not entertaining for me. if it was for you...that's cool, but your attempts to demean my opinion simply because you liked the movie are just idiotic. i am attacking the filmmakers for putting out garbage. you are attacking a viewer here, and on imdb, for their opinion. what can i say other than you must be right because you say so. end of discussion.

The relationship between the satellite and the monster is pure speculation. There is no way that monster was camped out at the shore of Coney Island getting disturbed by the satellite. The whole viral campaign explained all the companies involved and how they relate with the satellite. It is a JJ Abrams thing he likes to do to tie everything together so contrary to your belief I did get it.

I apologize if you feel it was a personal attack. I was just rebuttling to your comments since you were the one who replied. I was just trying to show logical explanations to the reasons you didn't like the movie. But like you said if you didn't get all the connections I can't help you there either. I was also in agreement with the statements on imdb and wasn't attacking them.

You are entitled to your opinion and I respect that but like you said to me don't attack the movie makers because you don't like the movie. I did like the movie and I can see no matter what reason I come up with or explanations it isn't going to sway you to like the movie. Although that wasn't my intent. I was just throwing my opinion out there like yourself.

Calling my responses idiotic and trying to brow beat me for liking the movie seems more of a personal attack than my responses ever where.

Anyway thanks for at least replying and having the discussion.

Cloverfield did suck. That is why it tanked the second week and won't get anywhere close to $100 million. I don't trust reviews ever and I certainly have never trusted imdb because half the time it is wrong. I use a different site than imdb because the results are not messed up.
