Cloverfield Sucked Ass

Hi-

I know the lack of being assaulted by my opinions was bittersweet for some of you but....I saw Cloverfield and feel the need to post a review. No spoilers so don't worry.

You see, I went into that movie with cautious optimism because i hoped it would be more than what you see in the trailer. I have to say that the trailer far surpassed what was on screen.

The biggest problem with the movie is that the effects are poor and the monster looks like a combination of all the monsters from other movies that JJ Abrams had seen. I just didn't buy that it was realistic at all. The proportions of the monster kept shifting depending on where in NYC it was. Next, there was no realism to how NYC was portrayed and where the monster was to be located. Next, the smaller parasites made no sense at all. Finally, the story was 100% predictable. You knew as soon as the monster hit who would live and who wouldn't. Finally there are other little plot holes like getting a fully charged cell phone battery from a new package in a store, the fact that the camera records apparently nearly 7 hrs of footage and that the camera was virtually indestructable, the fact that there is a full military response in NYC within minutes of the monster hitting (not air support but troops on the ground)...just little things that were wrong.

I honestly believe that these filmmakers were so busy thinking that this hand-held first person account was such an awesome way to tell a story, that they forgot the check to make sure the story actually stood up. The directing was poor, the effects/CGI were terrible but the acting was ok and if you take the story of a group of friends trying to survive without all the errors in the production, it might warrant a of As it is, it is just barely a

Sounds like a rental and not an admission ticket.

CLOVERFIELD was brilliant!

I thought the SFX and scenes of tension the movie produced were first rate. Particulary the sequence in the subway tunnel as well as the helicopter sequence. I don't grip my theater armrest often, but I did during those two sequences for sure.

The acting was far from sub-par, I cared for these characters very much. I for one did'nt have a clue who'd live or not and I find it difficult for anyone to make such immediatle assumptions upon the monsters attack of NYC.

I think PP read way too much into the "realism" aspect of the movie and didn't address the moral fundamentals the movie posited for its viewers. It eerily remined me of the disaterous events of 9/11 and the unexpected moments of courage and determination that people in perilous circumstances can achieve for one another. The movie is ultimiatley about the bonds of love and friendship. I for one was genunily swept up by the movie, regaurdless of plot holes.

I give CLOVERFIELD a 9 out of 10.

Saw it last night. It was ingenious. The shaky camera made me a little motion sick but I think that really drew me into the movie more. I was tensed up from the very beginning and did not release until I was home from the movie.

Go and see it in the theater. This will not translate well to Home viewing unless you have a bad ass home theater. The sound and enormity of the theater screen really add to the enjoyment of this one.

I would give it an 8 out of 10.

8 out of 10 for me. I don't watch a whole lot of television so I wasn't bombarded by advertisements. I had an idea of how the movie was going to be before hand and it pretty much was that. It was a fun popcorn flick. I didn't think that the effects were too bad and the whole idea of the film was very simple and it worked. This isn't Shakespeare.
