Hi-
I know the lack of being assaulted by my opinions was bittersweet for some of you but....I saw Cloverfield and feel the need to post a review. No spoilers so don't worry.
You see, I went into that movie with cautious optimism because i hoped it would be more than what you see in the trailer. I have to say that the trailer far surpassed what was on screen.
The biggest problem with the movie is that the effects are poor and the monster looks like a combination of all the monsters from other movies that JJ Abrams had seen. I just didn't buy that it was realistic at all. The proportions of the monster kept shifting depending on where in NYC it was. Next, there was no realism to how NYC was portrayed and where the monster was to be located. Next, the smaller parasites made no sense at all. Finally, the story was 100% predictable. You knew as soon as the monster hit who would live and who wouldn't. Finally there are other little plot holes like getting a fully charged cell phone battery from a new package in a store, the fact that the camera records apparently nearly 7 hrs of footage and that the camera was virtually indestructable, the fact that there is a full military response in NYC within minutes of the monster hitting (not air support but troops on the ground)...just little things that were wrong.
I honestly believe that these filmmakers were so busy thinking that this hand-held first person account was such an awesome way to tell a story, that they forgot the check to make sure the story actually stood up. The directing was poor, the effects/CGI were terrible but the acting was ok and if you take the story of a group of friends trying to survive without all the errors in the production, it might warrant a
