Dual-Layer Burners

The price of Dual-Layer discs keeps dropping and dropping. They are currently @ roughly $9/disc. By Christmas, I'm sure they will be half that.

Has anybody out there used them? At the moment, they still aren't a viable alternative to DVD+/- , but eventually they will be. How seemless is the burning process? What programs are you using to burn with? Does Nero support Dual-Layer? I'm sure DVD X Copy doesn't...

Technically, you should be able to fit a full DVD-9 (the format almost all movies these days use) onto 1 Dual-Layer DVD. Is this the case? From what I have read, Dual-Layer isn't technically DVD-9...but if you can fit the same amount of stuff onto both, then....

If everything is as good as it sounds, I'll probably make the switch once the media is around $2/disc.

i have a pioneer 104 and i see no need to upgrade. the single layer dvd-r's are already very sensitive to dust and fingerprints, so i can't even imagine what it's like with 2 layers.
also 90% of all movies fit nicely onto a single dvd-r with some compression. and for really long ones i use 2 discs. at the current prices for media it's no biggie.

I currently pay ~$.50/DVD for high quality DVDs (TDK, Memorex), and tend to go about 60% using 2-discs. I despise compression, as it shows up quite a bit on nicer HDTVs. I currently can get DVD+DL for ~$7/DVD, which is still not worth it yet to me.

So nobody out there burns on DL? Or has at least tried it to verify proper functionality?

Take a look at the HP model. It will burn the DL DVDs using the DVD-ROM bit setting trick and will increase playablility that way. THis is done to trick players into thinking the disc is a DVD-ROM (like a standard stamped disc) not a DVD+R. The SONY and PIONEER dual layer burners have had some serious compatibility issues. CHeck out the HP DL on costco.com:
http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product...rPath=84*1373*

Also, you'll need a burning app (like the latest version of Nero or Alchohol 120%) that will recognize the new DL drives and allow you to burn onto DL media

I've tried burning a DL at work with the pioneer 108 and have had little luck getting it to play. Computer drives read fine, xbox no, ps2 no, apex dvd player no, koss dvd player(which to date has played everything) will start the dvd and when the shift to the second layer comes it locks up and sony 300+1 no.

I've done about 7 or so discs and have absolutely no problems with my NEC 2510a dual layer burner. I have also cracked firmware so with bitsetting even my players that don't play much media at all it plays these as if they were the standard media.
