Arrested Development cancelled!

'Arrested Development' gets the ax
'7th Heaven' also ending run

Friday, November 11, 2005; Posted: 2:54 p.m. EST (19:54 GMT)

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Two TV families appear to be getting the boot.

The Camdens will bid farewell to viewers in May when the WB Network's top-rated family drama "7th Heaven" ends its run after 10 seasons in what sources said was largely a cost-cutting move.

The Bluth clan of Fox's ratings-challenged "Arrested Development" is also headed for the exit after Fox cut the third-season order on the Emmy-winning comedy to 13 episodes.

Also getting the ax at Fox is "Arrested's" companion on Monday, the freshman comedy "Kitchen Confidential," whose order will not be extended beyond the initial 13 episodes.

"7th Heaven," whose debut on August 26, 1996, marked the first-ever Monday broadcast of the then-fledging WB Network, will bow out as the longest-running family drama on television.

After 10 seasons, the show is still a top draw for WB, averaging 5.1 million viewers this season to date. Creatively, the show also will go out in style, creator Brenda Hampton said.

"I think this is the best season we've ever had, and we're planning a very exciting and heartwarming conclusion to the series," she said. "On the show, we talk about choosing your feelings, and we chose to feel happy and blessed to have been on the air for so long."

There is talk about a potential "7th Heaven" spinoff, but Hampton admits that would be hard to do.

"('7th Heaven') is a family show," she said. "I think the success of the show is that the family is intact with the mom, the dad and the children, so it is a very difficult show to spin off."

Sources indicated that the reasons to take "7th Heaven" off the air were primarily financial. As series age, they get more and more expensive, with the price tag especially high for a show with a large cast like "7th Heaven." The cancellation of the long-running series also comes during a process of extensive cost-cutting across all Warner Bros. divisions.

As for the demise of "Arrested," it comes just as the acclaimed comedy came back this week after a hiatus to make room for Fox's baseball coverage. The two back-to-back episodes averaged a paltry 4 million viewers Monday, sending Fox to fifth place in the 8 p.m. hour and putting a dent on the ratings of its lead-out, the rookie drama "Prison Break."

There is a possibility that the show will be shopped around, but its high cost is expected to be prohibitive for a cable network.

Fox said Thursday that it will pull "Arrested Development" and "Kitchen Confidential" off the schedule for the remaining three Mondays of the November sweep, replacing them with a rerun of the previous episode of "Prison Break" leading into an original episode of the serialized drama.

"Arrested" and "Kitchen" are set to return to their time slots with original episodes December 5, following the fall finale of "Prison Break" on November 28.

This is truly sad. One of the most intelligent and clever shows out there will be gone very soon. Not sure if this is an insult to the network administration or the numskulls who do or do not watch good tv OR BOTH

Unhappy

Indeed...very sad news. I really do not understand why Arrested Development has failed to capture a larger audience. It's easily one of the funniest and smartest shows on TV and the DVDs are endlessly rewatchable. I'm always picking up new things I missed on earlier viewings.

Yep. It made for a sad morning on Friday when I read the news. Truly a shame when shit like Freddy gets picked up for a full season the day this was cancelled. It is obvious the people that have the nielsen boxes represent the lowest common denominator.

I'm just hoping that in the remaining episodes they can pull off that Justine Bateman cameo.

To be fair, everyone is saying cancelled, but every report only states that the episodes have been cut back. So the writing looks like it is on the wall, but there is still that tiniest sliver of hope.

It is doubtful there will be any takers though. The cost to produce the show is too high for a normal cable outlet like F/X, and HBO (the most talked about option) develops their own hit shows. They wouldn't want someone elses ratings reject. As for other Broadcast networks, ABC had a similar situation with Sports Night, garnered all kinds of critical acclaim and awards, they couldn't find the viewers for that show either.

However, since NBC has sunk like a stone the past couple of years, I think this show would fit perfect alongside Earl, the Office & Scrubs. Talk about making Thursdays 'must see' again. Drop those turds they currently run called Joey & Will & Grace. NBC had smart and quirky with Frasier, not to the extent of the Bluths, but it might stand a chance there.

The only hit shows Fox has that they can use for a lead in are the Simpsons and American Idol. Both of which are a way different demo.

i can see why this show didn't capture an audience...poor markerting and placement. let's see...in season 2 it was on sunday night with crap reality tv and now in season 3, it was off the air for baseball and now competes with football. this is a tuesday or wednesday show...that would be perfect placement for it to capture an audience and fox needs to market the show. let's face it, during the playoffs, every other commercial was for prison break....can you tell me that you remember any for AD.

regarding moving it...it will be tough for anyone other than NBC to take it, and though they would be admitting that their shows suck by taking it...you never know. HBO will probably not take it for reasons already mentioned..and moreover, they don't need it. Showtime has been mentioned because 1) they want to compete with HBO for series development/awards/ratings and 2) they can afford it.

As for 7th heaven...thank god...i hate the show. plus now jessica beil can get naked in a movie! i read somewhere that the contract she had for that show restricted her from nude scenes in movies...don't know if that is true...but she has a nice rack!

this is very sad, it only shows what a bunch of morons the network execs are. It surprises me how much people prefer shalow, brainless ridiculous shows like reality shows over smart entretainment like Arrested Development. I cant believe how a great show like this gets the boot, but crap like Wife Swap remains in there.
