Aquaman Pilot?

Aquaman Pilot Swims to The WB
Source: The Hollywood Reporter November 14, 2005

Smallville executive producers Miles Millar and Alfred Gough are developing an Aquaman pilot for The WB network, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The new project is envisioned as a contemporary reinterpretation of the DC Comics character who lives in the deep sea and enlists sharks and other oceanic creatures to help him in his crime-fighting endeavors.

The new-model Aquaman will be a man in his early twenties, adds the trade. As is the case on Smallville, there won't be any presto-chango into costumes or other superhero accessories when his superpowers are invoked.

The October 20 episode of Smallville, titled "Aqua," featured Clark Kent encountering a mysterious young swimmer and do-gooder dubbed "A.C.," played by Alan Ritchson. The episode was not meant to be a template for the Aquaman project and Millar and Gough will search for a new actor for the lead role.

The pilot tentatively is set to shoot early next year in Florida.

According to the Aquaman lore, the character is the exiled king of the lost underwater civilization of Atlantis. The former Prince Orin was abandoned as a child, raised by dolphins and later adopted by a lighthouse keeper named Arthur Curry.

Aquaman made his first appearance in a DC Comics publication in 1941 and remains an active comic book franchise.

are you serious? they didn't ruin superman's comic roots enough with smallville...they are going to reimagine another comic book. this one probably won't do as well as smallville as many people know superman and his story and wanted to see where smallville went (though i think it is a horrible show in the chronology of superman as i know it)

aquaman is not widely known and therefore will take more to sell it to viewers.

wasn't this the talk of Entourage...ie the guy on that show was trying to get the role of aquaman in the movie directed by james cameron?

I like smallville... I like all things superman... except superman IV bleh.

Aquaman, is a pussy- and this would actually be a good way to reinvent him. But, sadly, I don't think this type of show would be the way to do it.

I don't see how they could make all of the underwater action believable. This will end up being a bad CGI bomb.

Aquaman has been through a few adaptation changes....in the cartoon Network initial introduction of Aquaman in Justice League, he had his original scaled orange and green suit, and he was what some considered to be an Eco-Terrorist, sabotaging any and all things that he could find that was damagin Earth's underwater ecosystem. Later they actually had him as the bad-ass King of Atlantis with the missing hand and ready to wage war on us surface dwellers.

now it looks as though he will undergoing another transformation in whatever capacity that Smallville and/or this new series described above will put him in.

this dude got pretty ripped up for his role.

Smallville had portrayed him as sortof a eco-terrorist as well. I dunno, I'd rather see them continue just to guest-spot random heros than spin them off...

I know lots of people who like smallvile, I however am NOT one of them. I really hate it when they try and give a comic book character a new past for the screen. They did it with the punisher when sent that crap ass mincomic along with the DVD and put him in Iraq...now cmon.

That pissed me off so bad I wanted to puke. All of us hardcore punisher fans KNOW he was in NAM and thats what started his vigilate mind set. If your not familiar with his past you guys should really check out Garth Ennis's Born.

The problem is you have these iconic characters with certain pasts because, when they were created, that was the proper context to place them in. As time marches on and the powers that be insist on rehashing existing characters and franchises, you have to place them in new contexts. Smallville is on the WB. The WB's audience can't relate to growing up as a teenager in rural Kansas in the 1920's or 1930's. Same with the Punisher. Today's quagmire (giggity!) is Iraq, not Vietnam.

If you don't change subjects as the audience changes, you have to change the subject's story to appeal to the new audience. Because god knows we can't think up new ideas. Did you hear there's a Robocop remake in the works? Robocop. Does that need a remake? How much longer before you can go to the theater and see a first-run movie along with its remake the next room over? But that's another topic...

Luckily we have the option to ignore new iterations of things we don't like, for the most part. The only reason I watch Smallville still is because I really really liked the first 2 seasons and after suffering through season 4, it can only go up... right?
