New Contest...

It's been a while, and while I'd like to do something monthly--seems to be easier to do it every quarter or half-year haha.

Anyway... Looking for input of what YOU (the contestant) would most like to see the competition be about, involving, limited to, etc.

If we have more than 20 competitors the prizes will be as follows:

Apple iPod Touch 8GB
Toshiba HD-DVD player (not sure on the replacement model)
HD-DVD/Blu-ray box set to be named later

We're going to try and have "bigger" competitions at least once a quarter. Entrants will need to be members (active is helpful, but we'll take it on a case-to-case basis).

make with the input. I'd like to start this by New Years, and end it by February something.

We'll have a private panel of judges, and the top 3 will have their choice of the prize. Depending on country, cash equivalent in USD may be used.

Awesome prizes, I agree! I don't know if this has been done already, but I'd like to see a contest about making a cover for a movie, but completely changing it's genre. So for example, The Hills Have Eyes as if it was a family comedy, or Ms. Doubtfire as if it was a gruesome horror.

Personally by choice of the prizes seem mainly HD and Blu_ray maybe the comp covers can be based on either of them formats, plus it would also boost the sections here. Seeing as there is some fantastic customs done for these formats but they aren't getting much feedback or recongnition for the customs....

I'm actually putting alot of my standard dvds in hd cases now as i think they look better
Plus there alot of titles to choose from on both formats...

here's a few ideas for comp

1: Covers for any title in a section (drama / sci-fi / horror / action / ect )on either Blu_ray or HD DVD or any title at all
2: Specify various sizes of covers (as there's different sizes)
3: 2 covers per entrant (only 1 may place)
4: No poster art
5: Specify the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes (giving choice would cause arguments) if stated this won't happen...
6: judges if not entering top artist names who know what they are looking for 2 off the top of my head are Arkflip and Jaldomar (they have a job checking covers throughly for spelling mistakes and other mistakes on another site and very good at it).

Few suggestions above may think of more to added abit later....

Making it a Hi-Def contest is a great idea!

how many people have high def stuff (compared to dvd though?

why not have a contest to see who could design a new logo for R1DB, and maybe a cover contest that we (whomever) pic a movie, and then everyone who enters the contest has to design a cover for THAT movie?

I like the way CM does it. They pick 4-5 films and then let members vote on which film they would like to see a cover for. Then the contestants have 5-7 days to submit their entry for voting.

Darth picking a movie has been done before contest for logo been done before.....

You need to look at the site in general the HD and Blu-ray sections are gaining covers but nobody is leaving much feedback for any customs there.....so a contest based on Hi Def covers is really what it needs....

Also i know alot of people have ps3's and xbox360's with hd add-on....

then you have 2 of the 3 prizes Jay is thinking of offering are Hi-Def orientated and 1 prize being a HD DVD player aswell........It's like doing a dvd cover comp where the winner gets a vcr player or a vhs tape.....

This time of year aswell many people are out buying HD DVD players ps3's and xbox 360 for christmas i also know TV sales have rocketed for the HD televisions and SkyHD are boosting a %43 increase in Skyhd subscribers.....so why dwell in the past when you can concentrate on the future.....

Doing a HD DVD and BLu_ray cover comp would make a nice refreshing change and something that's not been done here before....

I never really care if you use posterart or not. Just keep in mind judges will grade down if too much is used. Perhaps whatever cover is created, has to be made for something available on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray and whatever cover they turn in, needs to be fitted for both DVD and the HD format. That way everyone wins, in some respect.

As for the "arguing" over prizes, there won't be an argument given 1st choses his price, then second is told what's left, and 3rd defaults.

Here's the basic outline that we should add to:

Cover contest General:

> You may NOT discuss your entry with anyone else--doing so will result in disqualification
> Covers may not be reviewed on other sites, or this one in WIP forums
> Cover may not be previously released on other sites or this one
> If you are selected as a winner, you'll need to provide access to the layered PSD to prove it's yours (if asked)
> You must be a member of R1DB to receive prizes/enter (member status or greater would be best)
> You may submit multiple covers, only one may receive prizes (even if you win all 3 places)

Cover Entry Specific:

> no limitation on poster art usage, but judging will be strongly based on creativity so the more you use the less you'll score
> Select a cover that does not have 2+ made for it already on R1DB (if you have questions, ask a moderator or myself)
>
>

Cover Grading:

> (%)Based on creativity
> (%)Based on originality
> (%)Based on composition/layout
> (%)Based on "fit" for the title

I like this idea, but we'll do it for movie posters instead. I've seen some of those and they turn out fairly hilarious. I don't really see the covers being used though
