Since The Thing and The Fly have already been mentioned, I'll go with Ben-Hur (1959) and The Wizard of Oz (1939).

apparently there was some ben hur film made in 1907(?) and wizard of oz was made in 1925 - both were silent versions and a big pile of crap

Cape Fear probably gets my vote. Mel Gibson's version of payback was better too, although I don't know if you'd consider it a remake. Just based on the same movie as Point Blank was.
Vanilla Sky is a contender in my books, too.
Although I have never seen the original Solaris, I quite enjoyed Clooney's version.
