| i too could have picked one of the last 2 options because i want to see which one "wins" before I jump in and buy something. if that takes a year or so..that's fine.

| With the PS3 problems, Sony is hoping and will be pushing Blu-Ray hard. I'm going to wait. |

| So what is it that's wrong with the current DVD format?
It is an extremely popular worldwide product after all..............If not THE most popular........
Of course! It can be copied!!
So the Sony/Matsushitas of this world have now developed some uncopyable systems - and guess who they want to fund them??
That's right - gullible "early adopters" who will rush out and buy players and then line up to replace their software - AGAIN!!
You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time.............. |

| well...early adopters are the beta testers of the world i guess...and they will help to determine which format ends up being superior or at least favored. this isn't really going to be like the betamax vs. vhs battle because in this case, both formats should be readily available and affordable.
on the subject of the ps3....i dunno about you but i never use my ps2 as a movie player...so i don't really care what the ps3 has to offer other than game quality. the format the game is on has no bearing on me.
as for this uncopyable system...you know that if it can be created, it can be hacked, and copied...
as for the popularity of dvds....i know that what will end up happening at first (probably the fall of 06) is that all the cool shit/extras/supplementals, etc will only be on hd-dvd or blu-ray and that the dvd format will be barebones movies...then just wait...a huge release, something that will sell millions of copies will be exclusively on the newer formats and not even available on the dvd format. this will happen within the next 12-18 months, then the hot item for christmas 07 will be a new blu-ray or hd-dvd player. i think they will be hot this year, but the big boom won't be until christmas 07.

That's probably exactly what they will do. And do you know what will happen to that "Not available on DVD" item. It will be pirated (on DVD) to death!!
And whose fault will that be? Create a gap in the market, and sure as eggs is eggs, pirates will fill it. (Microsoft don't sell XP Media Center Edition as a standalone product - guess what all the pirates sell?).
Personally, I was hooked on the hype the first time - DVD offers BRILLIANT pictures - so do I now need an even better one? Tell it to the trees......... |

| yeah...ya know it is very hard to justify new technologies based on picture quality. at some point, 2d display technology is going to get as good as it can get and its almost there. wake me when we have real 3d holographic displays that affordably can entertain me.

| As far as DVD's go, I think they've been maxed out. Picture quality aside (it really won't be much better, from what I've read), DVD's hold right now almost 9 gigs of data in DL. This is a lot, but a nice 25 gigs per single layer disc sounds GREAT. The industry definitly chose this route to defy pirates, but there is a lot you can do with that much space (especially when they get to the point of being available for burning! I just backed up my valuable media files to about 31 dvd 5's; they would only take up about 6 Blu-Rays. Holy cow.)
Aside from that, there's is almost no interactivity or creativity allowed with the current format. A new format means new features built into the disc player, so we can have much cooler content, with much more interactivity.
But will dvd really be dead? I don't think so; I get people on a daily basis asking for VHS movies to rent, so DVD will probably hang on for a good long while.
BTW, is Blu-Ray supposed to be backwards compatible with DVD? Probably not... but that would be really, really good. I would definitly get one then...

| I'm actually quite upset about the change and don't see the point. Many times there are movies that don't even use up the space on a regular DVD, rare, but it happens. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't last. It will have to be a drastic change for me to wan't to change with it. |
