Blue Ray and HD

So is everyone ready to start re-buying all of their movies, and reformatting all of their scans and customs? I refer in particular to one of the threads below with respect to the thousands of "old-style" DVDs people have amassed.

< Sigh! >

Perhaps a media boycott is in order.

Not a chance, at least for the forseeable future. New dvd player, new tv/monitor, new cables... then the dvds. Maybe if the lottery is generous...

i will buy a new player in whatever format wins. my money is on HD...only because of sony's track record with other formats, beta, minidisc, memory stick etc....

BUT i will not rebuy any of the movies i have until more features are available. if the movie is a re-release of anything identical or even 75% of the same content as the standard dvd release, i will not rebuy anything.

I'm not ready to rebuy them yet. But i do have a question.................
Can you play a regular dvd, and up-convert the files to HD and then burn the movie in HD dvd burner?

I was wondering if it was possible

Sure, it's possible. Why would you want to? If you have a blue laser player and an HD monitor, you can play back regular DVDs and it will be scaled up for you.

why would you want to....you are resizing the image more than double its original resolution. it won't look as good as hd or blu-ray movies. also the potential expense of doing it and wasting all the space on the hd or blu-ray disc makes it seem somewhat cost prohibitive.

Could I please finish upgrading from VHS to DVD before we eliminate yet another format?

I'm curious to know if the industry plans to upgrade, especially since they've already made it clear that less than 75% of the movies released on VHS will ever be re-released in DVD format or better, and even less will ever be re-released in HD.

I do look forward to an inexpensive Blu-Ray burner so I can upgrade my server backups, but I don't have any plans at all to upgrade my DVD collection.
